Web-based reservoir simulation for collaborative carbon storage planning
Web-Based Reservoir Simulation: Applications for Carbon Storage
N. Andrianov, GEUS | Published: June 2025
The platform is a prototype web-based collaboration tool designed to promote transparent communication and knowledge sharing among competent authorities, industry stakeholders, and local communities. It enables collective work on a shared geological model and associated numerical simulations to support carbon storage initiatives. Through the platform, users can access geological data for a target formation, configure CO₂ injection scenarios, perform subsurface flow simulations, and visualize results directly in a web browser. Built on open-source software, the system ensures transparent and user-friendly access to digital geoscientific data, fostering innovation essential for advancing the green transition toward a net-zero future. Ongoing development focuses on enhancing the platform's capabilities, including establishing a hierarchy of storage capacity estimates for data-limited regions, improving integration between detailed and regional reservoir models, and accounting for pressure communication between neighboring CO₂ injection sites.
